Volunteers roll up their sleeves

Over two days in October, teams of Foot Anstey volunteers are joining the Hearts Together team to carry out essential decorating work across two wings of the charity’s Hospital Hotel accommodation. The project forms part of Foot Anstey’s Responsible Business programme, which encourages colleagues to give their time and skills to support community organisations across the South West.

Hearts Together provides accommodation and support for patients receiving treatment at Derriford Hospital, as well as for their families and loved ones. The charity’s mission is to offer a safe, nurturing and peaceful sanctuary for people facing some of life’s most difficult moments, including parents with babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, individuals undergoing cancer treatment, carers and those visiting loved ones receiving critical care.

The bedrooms being redecorated are in constant use throughout the year, with the charity regularly operating at full capacity. The planned works will help to keep the spaces welcoming and comfortable for guests while ensuring disruption is kept to a minimum.

With demand for our rooms always so high, it can be a challenge to carry out maintenance and decorating work without impacting the families who rely on us. Thanks to Foot Anstey’s support, we’re able to complete this important work quickly and efficiently while continuing to provide a calm and comfortable environment for our guests.”

Foot Anstey’s involvement reflects their long-standing commitment to supporting local causes through practical, hands-on volunteering. Their help ensures the charity can focus more of its fundraising income on its longer-term £11 million development project, which aims to expand facilities and reduce the 4,000 nights of accommodation currently turned away each year.

25 Years of Hearts Together!

We celebrated Hearts Together’s 25th anniversary this month with a party at our Hospital Hotel, highlighted by fundraiser Ricky Callow completing a 37-mile challenge. The day honoured our founder, Monica Pearce, celebrated the support we provide to families facing medical treatment, and marked the launch of our new Sponsor a Counsellor campaign to expand emotional support services for guests.

Our plans to expand

Our big build project sees Hearts Together set to expand from 26 bedrooms to 73 over two build phases, an ambitious but very necessary challenge that we intend to meet head on, as we look to accommodate the ever-growing needs of patients, carers, relatives, our local community, healthcare professionals and trainees.

This service has already shown to be absolutely invaluable, helping to reduce the stress and cost of transport, meaning that our guests can stay focused on supporting their loved ones or getting better themselves.

If you have been helped by our charity and would like to help others like you, why not make a donation or fundraise for our pay it forward campaign. We use the money raised through this appeal to provide financial support to individuals who would otherwise be unable to afford to stay at our Hospital Guest Accommodation.
